What is the correct lighting for cannabis indoors

Light plays an important role in the development of cannabis plants. Affects many aspects. Understanding how light interacts with the plant and good lighting management is the key to optimizing growing conditions and achieving maximum yield.

Mechanism of action

Light is absorbed by pigments (chlorophylls) in the chloroplasts of leaves. It is then used to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose (sugar) and oxygen. Glucose is the source of energy for the growth and development of the plant, and oxygen is released into the atmosphere. Light intensity directly affects the rate of photosynthesis. The more light a plant receives, the more sugar it can produce. The plant's response to light affects the external shape and physiological processes:

  • blue light (400-500 nm) stimulates the growth of stems and leaves, promotes the formation of a strong root system;
  • red light (600-700 nm) triggers the plant’s transition to flowering;
  • blue and violet light (400-450 nm) stimulate the production of protective substances that increase resistance to diseases and pests.

Light regime (the ratio of hours of light to darkness) influences flowering, dormancy, and photosynthesis. Lighting needs may vary depending on the cannabis variety, stage of development, and desired results: maximum growth, abundant flowering, resin content.

Light mode

Photoperiodic varieties go into flowering at a certain ratio of hours of light and darkness. Growing season: 18-20 hours of light, 4-6 hours of darkness. Flowering: 12 hours of light, 12 hours of darkness. Buds, inflorescences and seeds are formed. The production of resin, terpenes and other active substances that affect the quality of the crop is stimulated.

Autoflowering strains do not rely on day length to begin flowering. Light mode: 18-24 hours of light per day. Intense light can result in increased yield, but it is important not to overcrowd the plants. To ensure accurate and stable lighting conditions, use a timer. Watch for signs of too little or too much light: yellowing leaves, slower growth. Adapt the light regime depending on the specific variety and the desired result.

Selecting a lamp type

Many types of lamps can be used for indoor growing. Most Popular:

  • fluorescent lamps (FLL); economical, heat up little, available in different spectrums; suitable for growing and flowering;
  • light-emitting diode (LED); energy efficient, durable, emit little heat, available in different spectrums; suitable for all phases of development;
  • sodium (DNaT); provide intense light, stimulate flowering;
  • metal halide (MGL); intense blue light; suitable for growing and flowering.

Reflectors are used to increase the amount of light reaching the plants. Provide good ventilation to prevent plants from overheating. Check the air temperature and humidity regularly. When choosing lamps, light spectrum, light mode and distance of the lamp from the plants, it is necessary to take into account the needs of the specific cannabis variety and stage of development.
