What seeds are suitable for the outdoors

Hemp seeds for the outdoors produce viable and unpretentious plants. You can artificially create a comfortable temperature, humidity and bright light in a greenhouse, but outdoors, nature takes care of that. Therefore, the air can be too dry, the wind can be strong, and the temperature can fall below the acceptable. To prevent the plant from dying and losing productivity due to stress, choose crops for the outdoors that are accustomed to the climate of a particular area.

Indica and sativa in the outdoors

Prior to cannabis cultivation, sativa grew in warm, humid climates and indica grew in cool, arid climates. This influenced their appearance and rate of maturity:

• Sativa plants are tall, with a receding root system, thin stems and narrow leaves so that moisture is not trapped and evaporates as quickly as possible. Sativa takes a long time to mature - the end of flowering is in October. This is also helped by the warm climate, where there are rarely frosts in the fall;

• indica is bushy and compact, with branched roots, a dense stem and fleshy leaves to store moisture. Indica plants tolerate temperature changes better because they grow in mountain climates. The indica ripens by the end of September.
• Each climate has its own type of cannabis. For warm regions with mild winters and close seas, sativa varieties and sativa-dominant hybrids are better suited. For temperate climates, regions with short summers and early frosts, indica or indicodominant hybrids are recommended. Also suitable are balanced strains, where the ratio of indica to sativa is about 50/50 in phenotype. The advantage of these seeds is the pronounced properties of the sativa with the high viability of the indica.

Autoflowers, photoperiodic and express varieties

Photoperiods of all three have the longest life cycle - the sativa matures by mid-October and the indica, depending on the variety, by early or late September. Therefore, for regions with short summers and early frosts, it is recommended to buy autoflowering or express marijuana seeds for outdoors:

The life cycle of autoflowers is limited to 10 weeks on average. In less than 3 months, the plant will go through the growing and flowering phases. Autoflowers are also more resistant to adverse weather conditions, fungus, mold and pests.
Express varieties are a development of Kalashnikov Seeds. They are photoperiodic plants, but their life cycle is shorter due to the faster development. Blossom already in September.
Resistance to various diseases is another useful property for the outdoors. Plants for outdoor cultivation should be as unpretentious as possible, especially if this is the first such experience.

Why is it important to consider local weather?

Climate is an important factor when choosing seeds for outdoor use. If the summer is short or there is frequent rain, standard varieties may simply not have time to ripen. In regions with frequent fogs, it is better not to choose varieties with dense cones - they are prone to mold. For the steppe, you should look for varieties with good resistance to heat and drought.

What soil do outdoor plants like?

Many people forget that the soil often has an unstable composition. In some regions, the acidity is high, in others - too clayey or, conversely, sandy. Plants in such soil may slow down in growth. Therefore, it is better to add humus, coconut substrate or a little compost before planting. If the soil is very hard, it needs to be loosened so that the roots can develop freely. This simple preparation significantly increases the chances of a good harvest.

You should not plant seeds in the soil in early spring. Even if it is warm during the day, night temperatures can still be fatal. The safe period is when the night temperature is consistently above +10 °C. In the southern regions, this may be the end of April, and in the northern regions, mid-May or even June. Sowing too early means losing the crop due to frost or slow development.

The sun is cannabis's main ally

Street plants need direct sunlight. At least 6 hours a day. If you plant a bush in the shade near a fence or tree, it will stretch out, become weak and will not produce dense inflorescences. It is best to place the plant on the south side, where the sun shines from morning to evening. In the northern regions, you should choose places with the most open horizon. Even a few extra hours of light per day can have a positive effect on the result.

Strong wind can break branches, especially during flowering. But light air movement is useful - it prevents moisture stagnation and the development of fungi. If the area is very open, it is worth planting a hedge or putting up a temporary windbreak made of mesh.

In open ground, the threat is not only from bad weather. Young shoots can be eaten by snails, mice, moles. Insects are also active: aphids, thrips, caterpillars. Protection is simple - make a fence of fine mesh around the plant, and at the flowering stage, carefully monitor the appearance of signs of damage.

What to look for when choosing a variety for outdoor use

You need to look not only at the type - auto or photo. A few more points are important:

• height of an adult plant - for limited areas it is better to take low-growing hybrids;
• resistance to moisture - if the region often rains, varieties with loose inflorescences are needed;
• life cycle duration - in the northern regions, plants that ripen by October are not suitable;
• taste and smell - for those who want a pleasant aroma, you should choose hybrids with fruity or coniferous notes.

Ripe dates are important

If the first frosts come in mid-September, and the flowering phase lasts until October, the leaves will start to turn yellow, the resins will not ripen, and the aroma will be weak. Therefore, varieties that ripen quickly are more suitable for the northern and central regions. Autoflowers have a short life cycle, do not depend on the length of daylight hours. Express plants with an accelerated vegetative stage can produce a harvest by the end of September. In regions with long and warm summers, photoperiod varieties can be used.
